Coordinating the Shipment of 140-ton Engines

Transporting heavy and oversized cargo is our specialty, and this recent project exemplifies the precision and expertise we bring to every shipment.

These three massive engines were heavy, irregularly shaped, and far too long for standard shipping containers, making them a perfect example of breakbulk shipping. Other typical breakbulk shipments includes heavy industrial machinery, construction materials, and project components: items that need careful handling, specialized equipment, and precise planning.

Our breakbulk specialists, Jo and Witze, took on the challenge of moving them from storage to their final placement on board a vessel. Securing a ship capable of transporting such massive cargo required not only technical knowledge but also strategic negotiation.

So how did we ship them? The project came down to two key phases:

1. Engineering & Planning

Each shipment begins with a detailed technical analysis, including dimensions, weight, and handling requirements. Jo and Witze worked directly with carriers to identify a ship that could meet both the load capacity and the schedule requirements.

An engineer calculated the optimal placement of each engine on board to maintain balance and safety throughout the voyage.

2. Secure Transport

At the terminal, the engines were moved using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs), providing precise control over these oversized loads. Once in position, a Gottwald crane lifted each engine on board, with every movement monitored in real time to mitigate risk and ensure accuracy.
